Teen/Teaser Tuesday – World War Z!!!
With the generation of horror flicks such as Saw, The Hills Have Eyes, Hostel, and Cabin in the Woods, gore has become the new norm for getting a good scare at the movies. Personally, I miss the scary movies that didn’t have to have endless torture and blood and guts to make an audience cringe, curl up into a ball, or grab the arm of the person next to them. Effective scare tactics and good old-fashioned suspense are enough to make a scary movie successful without all that extra crap.
That being said, World War Z was awesome!!! Some major zombie or Walking Dead fans may have been disappointed if they went in expecting a lot of close-up shots of zombie-killing, brain-eating, blood-spattering, limb-tearing gore. Because there wasn’t much of that. In fact, there wasn’t much of that at all. I mean, sure they kill quite a few zombies, but it’s not in your face. Most of it is far away, implied, quick, or something like an explosion where you can’t see all of it.
I’m sure you can gather by now that I didn’t miss the gore. Not just because I don’t like it either. There was plenty of suspense, thrills, close-calls, and shocking moments to keep me on the edge of my seat the entire time. In fact, I don’t think I’ve seen that much suspense for that long of a time frame before. I mean, it was practically from start to finish with not many gaps in between of non-stop suspense. Yet, at the same time, it didn’t feel like endless action with no plot.
You also feel for the characters and, for the most part, don’t sense the cheesiness or corniness of the fact it’s about a zombie apocalypse. The epic and often even soft music helped make it seem real and serious instead of corny, and the actors did a fantastic job of being believable and likable. The only time I had to laugh at the whole “zombie” thing was when the one zombie near the end kept growling and then chomping his front teeth together super fast like he was trying to bite Brad Pitt through the glass. That part was actually quite funny – but I think it may have been on purpose.
All in all, World War Z is a great scary and suspenseful movie, but clean enough for all teens to enjoy as well without their parents worrying about them being desensitized by too much gore.

I want to go see this, but my grandson is staying with us right now. He’s a little young for this. Hope it’s still playing next week.
